What Is SCORM?
SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a set of technical standards for eLearning software products and controls how online learning content and the Learning Management System (LMS) communicate. The LMS is the platform on which you will publish your content to allow users to enroll and take the course. As there are many authoring tools and LMS available today, SCORM standardizes and ensures that the structure of e-learning courses is interoperable and reusable, regardless of what platform you choose to use!
SCORM aims to give wider access to eLearning content in any e-learning system. It stores and delivers content, making it more accessible to learners across any device.
With a SCORM-compliant eLearning course, you can track the following metrics for each user:
- time
- completion
- pass/fail
- score
What Is a SCORM Package or ‘PIF’?
A SCORM-compatible package is a ZIP file, also known as ‘Package Interchange Format’ (PIF) that contains the following:
- A manifest file. It defines the structure and sequencing of the content files.
- A schema file. It contains information about what files are included in the manifest file and how we should use them.
- Resource files. The course content can include HTML files, images, and audio or video files, for example.
XLIFF files were designed to be compatible with the most widely used CAT tools within the localization industry. This format then allows for a smooth export/import process that lets you simply import the translated files back after translation and be ready to go.
What Are the Benefits of SCORM?
There are many benefits to using SCORM-compliant eLearning content:
- Consistent eLearning experience for learners
- Accountable learner progress
- Affordable course content maintenance
How Can SimulTrans Help?
You might need to create SCORM packages from already developed course content your team has created. SimulTrans can help you convert your existing eLearning course content into a SCORM-compliant course first, then translate it into any language you need.
By outsourcing the SCORM creation process, we can help you re-engineer your eLearning course from separate assets into a SCORM-compliant course by reusing content, saving you time and money.
