Translation memory is a database of the translations created by human translators. As translators work, each segment of text they translate is stored in a repository matching the source language with the target language segments.
Reuse of Previous Translations
The primary benefit of translation memory is its ability to reuse previous translations for updates or similar projects. When translation is requested for a software string, documentation sentence, or other text segment that has been translated previously for the same client, the translation can be reused. This offers several benefits:
- Accelerated project schedule, requiring less time for translation
- Reduced translation expense, as segments need not be retranslated
- Increased consistency, ensuring translators have quick reference to previously used terminology
There may additionally be potential savings available through the repetitive terminology across products or components.
Translation Memory Tools
SimulTrans uses a variety of industry-standard translation memory tools. Rather than develop limited proprietary systems, we rely on best-of-breed software applications available in the marketplace. Different tools are best suited to different projects. The following factors are considered when determining which tool(s) to use for a particular project or client:
- Format of source materials
- Parsing rules used to create previous translation memory files
- Size of the translation team
- Mix of target languages
You Own the Translation Memory
SimulTrans will store and manage your translation memory for all your projects. At any time, you may request translation memory files, as we provide the ownership of translation memory assets to our clients at no additional charge. We are happy to provide your memory repository whenever requested, in an accessible format, such as TMX, an XML-based standard used for the storage of translation memory.
